The next morning, Kai blinked into the pre-dawn gloom, Liam’s gentle, even breaths signaling he was still asleep in the other bed. Too bad Kai had barely managed two hours of shuteye himself. After what had happened with that virus, he was too riled to sleep. Instead, he stared up at the plain white ceiling and sighed. The fact a certain federal agent with a luscious ass and attitude to burn filled his dreams didn’t help either.

Glancing over, he spied the long, pale stretch of Liam’s spine through the shadows. The guy was a side-sleeper, apparently, the rest of his body tucked into a ball, with only a hint of his silly pink-poodle-festooned PJ bottoms visible beneath the sheets. When Liam walked out of the bathroom in those last night, Kai had damned near lost it. Liam even had a pair of fuzzy pink slippers to complete the ensemble.

Not what he’d expected from the man at all.

Then again, Liam had been surprising Kai a lot these days.

Liam moaned low then mumbled something in his sleep, the low, husky sound zapping straight to Kai’s groin. His body tightened beneath the covers, and he cursed, getting up and padding to the bathroom to splash cold water on his face for the umpteenth time since they’d agreed to share this motel room. Apparently, there was some bowling convention in town and all the other rooms were taken. And rather than drive around trying to find somewhere else, they’d decided to stay here so they hit get back on the road in a hurry the next morning.

Kai had thought it wouldn’t be a big deal. In fact, he hadn’t thought any of this working together to solve his brother’s murder would amount to anything between him and Liam. He’d thought his resentment and grief would be solid barriers against any unwanted, inappropriate attraction he felt for the guy.

He’d been wrong.

Because despite it all, he’d grown to see Liam in a different light. And while he was still grieving, and very much intended to find and punish the people responsible for Ryker’s death, Kai was beginning to think maybe, just maybe, there was a light at the end of the tunnel for them. That after all this was over, perhaps they could go on to be… well, if not exactly friends, then at least cordial to each other.

He’d like that. If Kai was honest with himself, he’d more than like it. He’d— Nope. Not going there.

Distracted, he shut the door behind him and flipped on the bathroom lights. Beneath the harsh florescent bulbs, his face looked tight and drawn. Dark circles smudged the skin under his eyes and there was a long indent down one cheek where he’d had his face smashed between two pillows to drowned out the soft seductive purr of Liam’s tiny groans while Liam slept.

It was stress. That was all. He was tired and overworked. That made you believe things that weren’t true, see connections that weren’t there. He didn’t have feelings for Liam.
